Cayman: Radar dome repairs ongoing images unavailable
Date: 5-SEP-2022
Radar imaging will be temporarily unavailable from Monday, 5 September 2022, until Friday, 9 September 2022, to facilitate ongoing repairs to the dome for the Kearney Gomez Doppler Radar.
The Cayman Islands National Weather Service (CINWS) apologises for any inconvenience this temporary disruption may cause to users.
Ongoing repairs to the radar began on Saturday, 27 August 2022, and are scheduled to continue up to Friday 9 September. Radar service is expected to be restored as soon as possible once all repairs to the dome are completed.
CINWS Acting Director General Kerry Powery said CINWS understands the importance of having radar imaging available during what is typically the busiest portion of the Atlantic Hurricane season.
“We made the decision to turn off the radar for this week in an effort to maximise the time available to the technicians who are working to repair the dome. The radar itself continues to be in good working order, thanks to repairs completed earlier this year, and it will be turned back on as soon as repairs to the dome are complete,” Powery said. “Again, we apologise for any inconvenience caused, but we expect these necessary repairs to help keep the radar in good working order through the rest of its expected lifetime.”
