PORT OF SPAIN (TRINIDAD & TOBAGO) – APRIL 27, 2023 — RBC Royal Bank (“RBC”) has announced the launch of its Caribbean Banking Graduate Internship Program with the first cohort of interns joining the bank from April 3, 2023. Designed for individuals seeking work experience in the Financial Services sector, the one-year paid internship will provide hands-on experience, mentorship, network building as well the opportunity to develop new skills and capabilities that will build a foundation for new graduates in an evolving work environment.
“We recognize there has been a shift from a job economy to a skills economy that requires a mobile and skilled workforce,” said Gretchen Camacho-Mohammed, Head Human Resources, RBC Caribbean Banking. “The intent of the program is to create meaningful work that provides a unique experience to bridge the transition from academics to employment,” she added.
The program was developed over the past year and is intended to afford participants professional development through targeted coaching and a learning curriculum, including on-the-job training, career exploration, self-directed learning, and mentorship. Participants will work in both the retail and commercial line of business within the bank, as well as support functions like treasury and finance.
Apart from the business development opportunities, the interns will support RBC’s community outreach and will also be assigned to work with the bank’s five employee resource groups, which fulfil mandates that include women empowerment, career development, and male development, as well as providing care for children, elders, partners, and self, and promoting allyship.
One of the graduate interns shared: “My experience has been nothing short of exceptional. My manager, and by extension my team make me feel at home. They have provided me with numerous opportunities
to learn and develop. So, if this is just the beginning, I can’t wait to see what the rest of the year has in store for me.”
In its initial phase the bank will employ 10 graduate interns across the Caribbean for a one-year period. Already two graduate interns have joined the bank in 2022. A similar but shorter program will be hosted during the June-August period for students in their first and second year of university.
This is not the first time RBC is opening its doors to interns, in 2019 the Bank hosted Future Launch and partnered with Nestle. This was the bank’s response to helping young people prepare for a drastically changing workforce that required students to develop twenty-first century skills, like digital literacy, entrepreneurship, and social intelligence to steer them successfully into the new workspace.
“We believe by helping young people to unlock their potential and launch their careers, we can assist them with building a stronger future for themselves,” said Camacho-Mohammed.
