USA South beat Cayman Islands in try fest 34-24

The USA South moved to the top of North Championship League table on Saturday with a narrow 34-30 over the Cayman Islands.

The South got tries from Chad Haynes, Chris Sigmund Brendan Smith, Jonathon Toombs and David Winiarczk to hold off a late charge by the Cayman team.

The game was tied 17-17 in the 39th minute when the USA South got a try from prop Chad Haynes to give his side a 24-17 lead into the break.

The South would open the scoring in the second half with a try from No. 8 Brendan Smith, converted by Chris Sigmund, who had nine points on the day from his try and two conversions.

The Caymans cued the second half come back a few moments later as No 8 Rich Lewis touched down on 51 minutes bringing the score to 31-24 with the Morgan Hayward conversion.

The Caymans continued to claw back as Hayward hit for two more penalties in the 63rd and 66th minutes to bring the score to 34-30. Hawyard was top scorer with 15 points from three conversions and three penalties.

The USA South came away with the bonus point for tries scored to finish with five points in its two matches. But the Cayman Islands managed the rare feat of claiming two bonus points in the loss, claiming four tries and also a loss by less than 7 points to co

The match concluded the North Championship League round robin, with the USA South now taking on South Championship League winners Guyana later this summer. The winner will then play in a relegation/promotion match with bottom performers of the Cup League competition’s North and South divisions.
