Cayman: Statement on Recent Murder in George Town
Premier Hon. Wayne Panton
The brazen daylight murder that occurred last Friday near Shedden Road in George Town, speaks to a new level of criminal threat which we must quickly and aggressively confront with every tool at our disposal.
The identity of the deceased has recently been revealed and on behalf of the Government, I wish to express my sincere sympathy to the family of the victim and to reassure them (and other residents of our Islands) that the safety and security of our people remains our number one priority.
The Royal Cayman Islands Police Service (RCIPS) is actively investigating numerous leads and working closely with members of the public to bring the perpetrators to justice. The team recently made some headway when they recovered the motor vehicle believed to be involved in the incident. To be sure, no arrests have yet been made in regards to the murder. Indeed, the Government reaffirms its commitment to fully supporting the RCIPS and new Commissioner Kurt Walton, in whom we have the greatest confidence.
The Police Service recently issued another appeal for witnesses to come forward and to provide information. I would like to join this call to action and to encourage members of the public to contact the Major Incident Room at 649-2930 with any information they may have about this tragic case. Anonymous tips can be provided directly to the RCIPS via the Confidential Tip Line at 949-7777 or via the Crime Stoppers website.
As I have said before, our beautiful country remains one of the safest and most stable places to live in the region. We will not allow a few “bad apples” to restrict our way of life or damage our global reputation.
