The crime statistics released by the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service this week reveal that overall crime in the first six months is up by a staggering 27% compared to 2013! This is mainly due to the rise in petty theft that seems to be going on unabated and is put down to the present economy and lack of jobs.

It is not all bad news.

Serious crime fell by just over 2% in the first six months of this year.

And, driving offences are down in every category overall by over 30% that would seem to mean persons are driving more responsibly.

Cynics might say it is because of the closing down of the traffic department….

There has only been one murder so far this year and the person who committed it took his own life, but with 15 firearm offences recorded already compared to 13 last year, there is no room for celebration. This is especially so with a figure of 5 investigations of attempted murders against 1 from last year and 19 wounding against 10.

I leave you with one good piece of news, the figures for burglaries and robberies are down from 2013 although attempted burglaries are almost double. Possibly, the perpetrators haven’t learnt their ‘craft’.
