Cayman’s Lauren Hew makes podium twice at Florida 1A Championships
Lauren Hew of the Cayman Islands was on the podium twice for Saint Andrews School at last weekend’s Florida 1 A Championships in Stuart, Florida.
She won her first medal in the 200-yard freestyle relay.
During the morning session Hew swam anchor as her team advanced to the championship final in a time 1:38.51.
She led off in the final and gave them an incredible start, uncorking a 23.72s effort. Her teammates Sydney Torres (24.50), Gabby Beltrano (24.74) and Hannah Trieschmann (24.24) combined to produce a time of 1:37.20 that was good enough for a silver medal.
The time also made them the fifth fastest team in Florida.
Hew later won a bronze medal in the 100-yard backstroke. She clocked 55.29, the fifth fastest time overall.
She was less fortunate in the 100-yard freestyle where she just missed a personal best performance.
Hew, who has a personal best of 50.95s, was one of three girls under 24 seconds at the half-way mark. However, she faded over the final half and ended fifth in a time of 51.23s.
Saint Andrews finished 11th overall at the championships. Their girls were fifth with 130 points.
