CCMI seeks 10 young Caymanians to receive FULL SCHOLARSHIPS for YELC programme!

CCMI SEEKS YOUNG CAYMANIANS TO BE SKILLED, ENTHUSIASTIC ENVIRONMENTAL AMBASSADORS

10 fully funded spaces available for students to learn to dive, gain knowledge in marine science, and develop professional skills

George Town, Cayman Islands; 8 March 2025 – Calling young ocean enthusiasts! Are you a young Caymanian (ages 16-20) who is passionate about the ocean and ready to literally dive into a future in marine science or conservation? You are invited to apply now for one of 10 fully funded scholarships to attend the Central Caribbean Marine Institute’s (CCMI) 2025 Young Environmentalist Leadership Course (YELC)! 

This four-month programme spans two islands, offers multiple experiences, and provides a unique immersive opportunity to gain professional skills, dive industry certifications, and hands-on experience in the field. Scholarships are limited, and the deadline to apply is Friday, 21^st March.

Started in 2012, more than 120 students have successfully completed the course. CCMI created YELC to bridge the gap for Caymanian students between leaving the education system and joining the workforce by providing them with employable skills and a background in environmentalism and conservation. Education Co-ordinator explains the importance of this programme to participants:

“The influence of the YELC programme on individuals that take part creates a distinct and lasting impact. Young Caymanians have the invaluable opportunity to gain hands-on knowledge, practical experience, and meaningful connections in the marine science field. This helps to shape the next generation of environmental leaders dedicated to preserving our marine ecosystem.”

The YELC programme begins in April in Grand Cayman, equipping participants with essential PADI diving certifications through Rescue Diver and emergency response training. In the final month of the programme (August), students attend a seven-day residential experience at the Little Cayman Research Centre (LCRC). During this week in Little Cayman, students engage in real-world marine research, assist with citizen science projects, and develop career-building skills through networking and workshops.

They leave YELC with a career path in focus, CV and interview skills, dive qualifications, contacts within the industry, and future opportunities to pursue. The CCMI education team maintains contact with YELC alumni, providing mentorship and guidance as requested, offering internships and employment where possible to provide additional opportunities, and engaging with the students through our growing alumni network.

Fully Funded Scholarships Available

Thanks to the generous support of programme sponsors Foster’s, Rotary Central, and CG BritCay, 10 fully funded scholarships are available to participants. These scholarships cover all YELC programme expenses, including SCUBA training in Grand Cayman with Go Pro Diving and educational materials. It also supports the seven-day residential component in Little Cayman, including round trip flights from Grand Cayman, accommodation at the LCRC, meals, ground transportation in Little Cayman, and use of dive equipment.

Who Can Apply? 

This opportunity is exclusively for young Caymanians and those with permanent resident status, ages 16-20, who are recent graduates or in their final year of school and eager to pursue a career in marine science, environmental conservation, or ecotourism.

Applications must include a completed form, a letter of recommendation, and two reference contacts. The deadline is 5:00 PM on 21st March 2025.
