Chalk Festival provides the ultimate family fun day
12th annual Chalkfest competition has something for every age.
Camana Bay, Grand Cayman (Tuesday, 19 May 2015): Artists of all ages will transform Camana Bay’s Town Centre into a larger-than-life art exhibit at the 12th annual Chalkfest competition on Saturday, 23 May from 10am to 1pm.
All can get involved in the friendly competition as artists vie for the honour of chalk champion. Families can enjoy an exciting array of free activities including live music by a local DJ, a Story Time hosted by Books & Books and a magic show, while a clown will be in the Town Centre to create balloon animals as a take-home treat. There will also be face painting and henna tattoos with local artist Shilpa Tagalpallewar available at a cost. These events will be held on The Paseo near The Observation Tower. Also, for the first time at Chalkfest, local artists will showcase their works in a special craft market along The Paseo near Abacus and NKY.
Using the pavement as their canvas, artists will create street art once again to raise money for the National Gallery of the Cayman Islands and to gain bragging rights, with first, second and third place prizes being awarded for the best artists in each age category.
The registration fee is just CI$5 for kids and CI$10 for adults. Entry categories are: Primary (5-10 years old), Middle School (11-13 years old), High School (14-17 years old) and Adults (18+). You can sign up from 9:30am on the day at the Chalk Station located at the junction of Market Street and The Paseo.
Another way to take part in the day and to donate to the National Gallery is to have fun and games with the large coin-cascade donation box, which will be located in the Town Centre.
To beat the fast-approaching summer heat, visitors are encouraged to park in the shaded Solaris Parking Garage behind Jessie’s Juice Bar and Anytime Fitness.
Background:
The National Gallery of the Cayman Islands started Chalkfest in 2003 as a part of Cayfest – a festival that showcases Cayman’s finest creative talent. Camana Bay, recognising the need for and beauty of art in our community, has been a sponsor of Chalkfest since 2008. In 2011, the National Gallery approached Camana Bay about taking over and growing the event for the future and it continues to be a beloved annual tradition enjoyed by artists of all ages and skill levels.
