China home to 241 million old people
Beijing, Feb 27 (Prensa Latina) China is home to 241 million people over 60 years of age, which makes necessary to seek more alternatives to face the growing trend in this sector of the population, an official source states today.
According to the latest statistics from the National Working Commission on Aging, this group of people accounts for 17.3 percent of the population and the plans suggest that there will be 487 million by 2050, or 34.9 percent of the total population.
Wu Yushao, deputy director of that department, noted that a society with 10 percent of its population aged 60 or older can be referred to as an ‘aging society.’
As many countries of the world, China has the challenge of addressing urgently the progressive aging of its citizens.
The government is working in that direction and one of the measures taken was to abolish the one child policy in 2016 in order to raise births to 90 million, 30 million of which are expected by 2050.
