PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad, Friday December 27, 2013, CMC – Ten months after he was struck by a car driven by a police officer that also killed a mother and two of her children, 21-year-old Ryan Rampersad has been able to laugh, cry and call out his children’s names.

The Trinidad Express newspaper reported on Thursday that Rampersad, who has been in hospital in a vegetative state since the February 24 accident, returned home to spend Christmas Day with family members when his “Christmas miracle” took place. He was scheduled to return to the hospital on Thursday.

“God is in charge at the end of the day, God has the last say,” said his mother Pearl James, telling Rampersad, “Don’t cry, Ryan. These are tears of joy. This is the best Christmas for us because you’re here”.

Rampersad said that he cannot remember anything about the accident and although his speech is slurred and soft, he remembers his children’s names, the names of his neighbours and loved ones, and also how to spell his name,” the newspaper reported.

Since the accident, Rampersad had been unable to breathe on his own and a tracheotomy tube had been inserted into his neck. He was also paralysed from the neck down, was not able to eat on his own and had to be fed through a tube in his stomach.

Rampersad, who said he was “very happy” to be home, affectionately touched the face of his daughter and smiled as he wished people a “Merry Christmas”.

“I want to thank everyone who prayed and supported Ryan from all over the world. I always said that Ryan will come along and, one day, he will walk again. In time, I am sure Ryan will walk again,” said his grandmother, Verro James.

Health Minister Dr Fuad Khan told the Express that Rampersad’s case was one of the most positive news stories of the year.
