On Tuesday (30) afternoon, a new Chemotherapy Unit project signing between the Cayman Islands Cancer Society (CICS) and the Cayman Islands Health Services Authority (HSA) will take place.

The Cayman Islands Cancer Society will be renovating the Old Lighthouse School, off Smith Road next to the hospital, into a new Chemotherapy Unit.  Upon competition, the CICS will hand over the unit to the HSA, making this facility and its services available to both visitors and residents of the Cayman Islands.

In May last year, CICS’ board chairperson Betty Ann Duty announced the joint project at Government House. Volunteers, sponsors, supporters and board members, attended the event.

Rodney Frederick of Frederick & McRae was reported to be the designer of the unit.

At the event Jennifer Weber, operations manager of the CICS, said the new unit will have four infusion chairs. This means it will be able cater to at least eight patients a day.

Ms Weber said, “Patients do get chemotherapy here, but it would be nice if they could have chemotherapy in a more suitable environment at this lousy time in their life. We’d also much rather that people stay here on Island for chemotherapy instead of having to go overseas. They can sleep in their own beds and be driven to and from the hospital by friends or family, rather than be in a hotel room somewhere they don’t know.”
