CMU_DeanWILLEMSTAD – On July 26th, 2018, at the annual Workshop of the Caribbean Accreditation Authority for Education in Medicine and other Health Professions (CAAM-HP), Dr. Ryan Jackson, Dean of Caribbean Medical University, established the Caribbean Council of Deans. This new Council will act as a way for the Deans of the various medical schools throughout the Caribbean to exchange ideas and collaborate on research and other projects. This is similar to the Council of Deans of the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) and the Council of Deans of Health in the UK. Twelve medical schools have already joined the Council with more to follow. There are discussions about having a combined conference for medical education in the Caribbean within the next year. This is a great step forward to improve the quality of medical education in the region through the mutually beneficial collaboration rather than the competition which often dominates.

This collaborative effort has arisen from the requirement that all medical schools throughout the world must be accredited by a regional accrediting body recognized by the World Federation of Medical Education by 2023. After 2023, the graduated of unaccredited medical schools will not be able to practice medicine in North America, Europe or most of the rest of the world. The recognized accrediting bodies include NVAO (Netherlands and Belgium), CAAM-HP (Caribbean), LCME (US and Canada) and 7 other regional bodies. The only other accrediting body in the Caribbean at this time is the Accreditation Commission on Colleges of Medicine (ACCM).
