Coalition For Cayman says voters should avoid a party-ruled government

Grand Cayman – April 15, 2013 Coalition for Cayman (C4C) today stated that a coalition government, where one political party does not hold a majority, can restore the Country First mindset we need to address the Cayman Islands biggest challenges.

“It’s time to look past labels, and elect honest, capable, independent-minded leaders for our next Assembly,” said Coalition for Cayman. “The political parties want to scare voters into believing thmegaphone_rough-e1352751627722at nothing will get done if no one party holds a majority, but the fact is that a coalition government will not only offer our Country a wider range of ideas and solutions, but it will also refocus government in putting the Country, not political parties, at the center of every decision,” C4C continued.

Historically, Cayman was successful under the leadership of independents. Political parties were only introduced in 2000, and recent polling indicates that Caymanian voters feel that the addition of political parties had a negative impact on government. In a poll conducted by the Caymanian Compass last September, more than 80% of Caymanian said political parties are “bad” or “terrible” for the Country, with the main complaint being divisiveness and party members obligation to “toe the party line.”

While Coalition for Cayman believes that the Country is better off with a coalition government instead of a party-formed government, the group does believe there are some honest and competent candidates within the parties and alliances, who do not aspire to a career in politics but are there to put Country First.

“There are good leaders amongst the candidates who, regardless of political affiliations, can contribute greatly to the future of the Cayman Islands,” said Coalition for Cayman. “Our goal is not to keep these leaders from serving, but rather to promote the concept of a coalition of honest, independent-minded leaders from all backgrounds who can come together, share ideas and build consensus and set our Country on the right path,” C4C continued.

“Before political parties, leaders from all parts of our Country were able to come together, organise and move forward effectively for the good of the Country. For leaders who are willing to put the Country before their party, this can still happen,” said C4C.

“There is just too much at stake, and we cannot afford to be limited or held back by the narrow view, or the shortcomings of any one party. For Cayman to succeed, we must all come together and work together, and there is no place where this collective spirit is more important than in our government,” C4C added.
