Colombian navy searches for 14 people after shipwreck in Caribbean sea
Colombia’s navy coastguards began searching for 14 people Monday, who went missing after a shipwreck on the coast of the country’s northwestern Antioqua department, officials said.
The shipwreck occurred when a boat, which was sailing from the town of Turbo to a beach resort of Capurgana, apparently hit a rock and only one survivor has been found, according to Alex Melo, commander of Uraba coastguard station.
The accident was being investigated by navy authorities.
“The search and rescue procedures were initiated, we have two coastguards units in those tasks,” Melo told local media.
According to the authorities, the only survivor had to swim for half an hour to the coastline to be assisted.
“That boat apparently departed from an uncertified and illegal dock and there is no record of how many people were aboard, when it left nor how the boat is named,” Melo added.
