Cruise ship worker confesses to raping and beating passenger
A cruise ship worker is accused of sexually assaulting a passenger and trying to throw her overboard while she was on a week long Caribbean cruise.
Court documents reveal 28-year old Ketut Pujayasa, is a citizen of Indonesia, and worked as a room service attendant on the ship.
Police say he confessed to using his master key to break into her room and started attacking the victim. The documents say he choked her and used a telephone cord to strangle her and then repeatedly punched her.
Police say the attack spilled onto the balcony where the attacker allegedly tried to push the victim over board, intending to kill her. The struggle then went back into the room where she was raped and beaten unconscious. Later she broke free and ran for help.
Police say Pujayasa went to his employee quarters and told his roommate to call security because he “killed someone.”
The victim was brought to a hospital in Florida and Pujayasa was arrested. He will face federal charges because it happened in international waters off the coast of Honduras.
Pujayasa reportedly told police he attacked the woman because she insulted him when he delivered food to her earlier in the day.
Holland America cruise line released a statement saying:
“While no words can adequately express our shock at this event, this has shaken the entire Holland America family to our very core. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victim and her family during this difficult time.”
Pujayasa was hired by the cruise line in 2012 after a screening.
The cruise line says the suspect was hired in 20-12, following a screening that included a clean criminal history check. They say no incident like this has happened in the company’s 140-year history.
