Cuba: The Park of Caribbean Heroes and Famous Citizens was opened in the Playa district of the Cuban capital

La Habana. April 26th.With the presence of the First Vice President of the State and Ministerial Councils, Salvador Valdés Mesa, the Park of Caribbean Heroes and Famous Citizens was opened in the Playa district of the Cuban capital. The event was also presided over by the President of the National Assembly, Esteban Lazo Hernández and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla

Also participating were Caribbean and Latin American members of the Diplomatic Corps accredited to our country, as well as Ministers, Representatives of National Organizations and Institutions closely linked to the Caribbean, Members of the Caribbean Association in Cuba and of the Chair of Caribbean Studies of the University of Havana, as well as a large representation of students from the 14 member countries of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).

During the ceremony, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Rogelio Sierra Díaz underscored the historic ties of solidarity, brotherhood and gratitude that unite Cuba and the Caribbean.  The Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs accentuated “today we inaugurate a work of art that symbolizes the bravery, valor, effort and determination of those persons who made the independence and sovereignty of our peoples possible”.

For her part, the Ambassador of Grenada, Her Excellency Mrs. Theresa Clair Clarice Charles, Dean of the Caribbean Diplomatic Corps, underlined the current relevance of Cuba – CARICOM relations, at the same time expressing appreciation to the Government and people of Cuba for their solidarity and cooperation throughout more than 40 years of exchanges.  In her words, she highlighted “we are grateful that Cuba has designed and built this monument.  It is an imperishable symbol of our historic relations”.

Dr. Eduardo Torres Cuevas, President of the Academy of History of Cuba and Director of the José Martí National Library explained to those present the symbolism of the sculptural piece dedicated to the Caribbean Heroes and Famous Citizens and stated “this monument speaks of the unity of those peoples. By preparing this park, we are crowning a symbol reflecting all the intensity and aptitude that our peoples have”.

As part of the event, a floral arrangement was placed before the monument paying tribute to the Caribbean Heroes and Famous Citizens, from the hands of the Ambassador of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Ellsworth John and the Cuban Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Rogelio Sierra Díaz.
