Caribbean Utilities Company, Ltd. (CUC) is hosting 18 students as part of its annual vocational and internship programme.

The high school and college students are being exposed to working in a professional environment while exploring a variety of career options that CUC has to offer. Some of the students have been assigned to the corporate setting in areas such as Human Resources and Corporate Communications and others are working in hard hats and boots on the engineering side in the Company’s Power Plant. This year, the programme which extends through July and August has nine university students and nine vocational (high school) students.

Enyer Rivers, a university student at South Wales, is currently working in the Human Resources Department. Mr. Rivers finds much pleasure in working at CUC and says that he would definitely recommend the summer internship to his friends. He is confident that if he returns home next summer, CUC will be his top choice for a possible summer internship again.

Recent high school graduate, Jayden Downey says, “Ever since I’ve been here at CUC, I know for sure that I’m leaning towards a career in electrical engineering.” The internship programme at CUC has given Mr. Downey clarity as to what areas of study he will pursue at university.

Pierce Serrant, high school graduate and prior CUC intern from the Cayman Islands Further Education School says, “I’m having a lot of fun working in the Information Technology here at CUC. I’ve made a lot of connections here and the people are lovely.” Mr. Serrant is learning the importance of networking by mingling with staff from his prior experience to making new connections as a summer intern.

As part of CUC’s corporate responsibility it endeavors to teach young people the importance of giving back to the community. Each year, the students are invited to partake in various community service outings especially the annual event with the Sunrise Adult Training Centre.

“Lunch and Learn” sessions are held weekly to allow the students to build basic professional and interpersonal skills as well as to promote teamwork and cohesiveness amongst coworkers. CUC firmly believes that investing in today’s talent, is to develop a brighter future for the country.
