Twenty-seven students, ranging from high school to university level have joined the Caribbean Utilities Company, Ltd. (CUC) annual summer and vocational programme, now in its thirteenth year.

The students started their placements in early July and for six weeks they will receive hands on training under the guidance of professionals within their assigned fields. This year’s students have been placed in various departments ranging from Engineering to Financial Services.

The programme is aimed at providing students with “an opportunity to gain meaningful experience in their field of interest,” said Programme Coordinator. Lauren Bush. “And for those students who are undecided about their careers, the programme can help them to make that decision.”

In addition to the technical training they receive, students also have the opportunity to participate in Lunch and Learn sessions where they obtain additional knowledge in areas such as resume writing and workplace etiquette. This summer programme also allows an opportunity for students to participate in the Company’s Community Involvement programme.

One student, Rochel Gardener says, “It is phenomenal working in CUC’s professional environment. I have acquired a vast amount of skills that will definitely benefit me with the career I aspire to attain. This programme has also helped me to understand the importance of volunteering within our community. I am eager to see what new knowledge the weeks ahead will bring.”

Another student, Maurice Rockett says, “This work experience has given me the opportunity to think about what I would like to do as a career. The CUC employees have been very supportive. Their willingness to share their skills has helped me in gaining insight to my possible career path.”

High performing students within the programme are often presented with additional opportunities. There are those who are welcomed back in the following years as well as those who remain with the Company on a contractual basis following the end of the six weeks. Some students have even been offered fulltime employment.

CUC’s summer programme forms part of the Company’s continued commitment to the development of the young people of the Cayman Islands.
