CUT Championships 2012

CUT Team

The Cayman Islands Track & Field U15 team travelled to Jamaica on July 19th to participate in the 14th edition of the C.U.T. (Caribbean Union of Teachers) Championship held at the National Stadium in Kingston July 20th and 21st.

The Cayman team finished 9th place in the medal standing out of a total of fourteen (14) countries winning – 1 Gold, 1 Silver and 1 Bronze medal. Barbados took 1st place followed by host Jamaica 2nd, Trinidad and Tobago 3rd, British Virgin Islands 4th and St. Kitts & Nevis 5th.

It was indeed a very good performance from the team said Coach Yen, as each athlete finished in the top seven (7) in their event, thus giving the Cayman Islands valuable points.  Several of them had personal best in their events; namely Louis Gordon who won gold in the U13

boys High Jump with 1.62m which was also a meet record. Lacee Barnes won silver in the U15 girls shot put with a distance of 11.47m and the open boys sprint medley team of Rashaun Conolly, Jouri Haylock, Jeavhon Jackson, and Jamal Walton won bronze with a time of 1.42.53s.

Other results were Kiara McLaughlin 4th in a time of 2.31 in the open girls 800m, Ronaldo Morrison 6th in the U15 boys Long Jump with a leap of 5.64m, Daneliz Thomas 5th in the U15 girls Javelin with a throw of 28.93m, as well as the U15 boys 4 x 100m 6th in a time of 46.69s.  Jordae Scott equaled her personal best with a leap of 1.35m in the U13 girls High Jump where she finished in 7th.   The team also had four 4thplace finishes – Louis Gordon in the U13 boys Long Jump 5.03m, Kiara McLaughlin in the open

800 girls 2.31s, Jamal Walton U15 boys 400m 52.27 and Pearl Morgan who tied for 3rd place in the girls U15 High Jump but lost out on a medal via the count back rule.

The final statistics were the Cayman Islands participated in 19 events won 3 medals, scored points in 16 events, which represents an 85% success rate, and a remarkable feat for the young team.

The Cayman Islands Athletic Association would like to sincerely thank Team Manager Ms. Paula Erskine, Asst. Manager Ms. Suzette Anderson and Coach Tyrone Yen, in addition to all the parents who travelled with the Team in order to make the trip a success.

Special thanks also to Ms. Barbara Wilson who worked tirelessly as one of the Technical Officials and kept the Cayman team well informed by supplying vital information when needed, and Ms. Molly Ann Moore who worked as a Starter at the meet gaining valuable exposure, as CIAA continues to develop it’s track officials to the highest standard.
