Dept. of Planning trains staff in new Building Code standards

Bldg Codes2009 International Code Training

The Department of Planning is training staff in advance of the transition from the 1999 Standard Building Code to the 2009 International Code Council (ICC) family of international codes.

Training will be facilitated by England Training Division, a US based, ICC certified training consultancy.

While training is geared at its own staff, the Department is inviting interested Code Officials, Architects, Engineers and Contractors to attend the introductory sessions free of charge. As space is limited, attendees are kindly asked to RSVP to [email protected] so that their names can be given to security, who will sign them in and out of the building from the staff entrance.

All lectures will be held at the Government Administration Building, 133 Elgin Avenue.

Free public parking is available off Humber Lane, behind the blue Sussex House building.

Depending on the response the department will repeat introductory sessions, facilitated by in-house staff. The dates for these sessions will be announced subsequently.

Members of the public are asked to please be patient with the Department of Planning as select staff will not be available to assist during the periods indicated. Regular duties will resume after training. In the interim the public are asked to direct any queries to 244-6501 or 244-6532.

Long term benefits to the public will include: updates to current building practices and updates to the referenced standards that govern resistance to high wind events like hurricanes, seismic, considerations and building services. Overall the International Codes will bring significant improvements to life, health and safety considerations that are not presently reflected in the 16-year-old Standard Building Code presently in use. The Cayman Islands Government will transition to the 2009 International Codes in early 2014.
