Afternoon tea at Woburn Abbey

The very English tradition of taking afternoon tea was popularised around 1840 at Woburn Abbey, Beds, where Duchess Anna Maria would enjoy a brew and cakes with her friends.

Tea is now served every day in The Duchess’ Tea Room, set within the grounds of Woburn Abbey offering a fine selection of teas, including its own blend.

Work up a thirst first by exploring the gorgeous gardens, or of course, there’s the safari park.

Drink in the authentic English gin experience by taking a 40-minute tour of Plymouth’s Black Friars Distillery, the oldest working gin factory in England. Explore the working home of Plymouth Gin since 1793, find out about the history of the distillery, which used to be a monastery, and get an introduction to how Plymouth Gin is made.

If you’re as much of a fan as Churchill was of Plymouth Gin martinis, opt for the Master Distiller’s Private Tour where you can create and distil your very own gin recipe. And if that still hasn’t quenched your thirst, there are plenty of gin cocktails to choose from at The Refectory Bar. Tours from £7.

Make a pork pie in Melton Mowbray

Leicestershire’s Melton Mowbray is home to the humble pork pie and Dickinson & Morris is the oldest pork pie bakery in the country. Ye Olde Pork Pie Shoppe has been going since 1851 and today it holds demonstrations on how they create these authentic English delicacies.
Even better, the shop is right next door to The Sausage Shop and near The Melton Cheeseboard, which stocks the ‘real’ Red Leicester and locally produced stilton. Pork pie demonstrations take place between 9am-3pm and must be pre-booked. They cost £1 each, but samples are included.
