Totally Underrated Honeymoon Destinations

By Doug Murray from Slice

One of the key ingredients for an unforgettable honeymoon is the right destination: one that has beauty, fun and romance by the bucketful. What it shouldn’t have is crowds of other newlyweds who’ll bore you with tales of their perfect wedding.

Here are some destinations that have everything you need for starting a life of wedded bliss together (but are just a little off the beaten honeymoon path).

1. Mendoza, Argentina

In the foothills of the Andes, Mendoza offers museums, spas, horseback riding, hiking, paragliding, rock climbing, kayaking and, in the winter months, skiing.

The region’s main claim to fame though is the world-class share-with-someone-special Malbec wines produced here. Mmm…

2. Iceland

Stunning Iceland is the destination for unusual adventures, from hiking across lava fields to hunting for elves. Its capital, Reykjavík, has a rocking nightlife and if you need a little boost to get you in the honeymoon mood, there’s always the Icelandic Phallological Museum.

3. Rural Quebec

Visiting Quebec is a bit like going to Europe without actually going to Europe. Sure, Montreal and Quebec City have the architecture and big-city sophistication but if you go further afield you’ll find charming villages, rugged coastline, forests and mountains, all infused with Francophone romance.

4. Montenegro

Historic fortified towns, cliff-top monasteries, great beaches, wildlife, lakes and mountains are just some of the treasures you’ll find in Montenegro.

Tourism in this Balkan country is still in its infancy making it a much less crowded honeymoon destination than neighbouring Croatia or the more famous Adriatic destinations of Greece and Turkey.

5. Pucon, Chile

Popular with backpackers, Pucon is just the destination for you if you want an adrenaline-filled honeymoon that won’t break the bank.

The small lakeside city is a great base from which to go on everything from kayaking tours to hikes up the nearby Villaricca volcano. The local thermal baths will soothe your aching muscles.

6. Hiddensee Island, Germany

Germany probably isn’t the first country that comes to mind when you think of island getaways but Hiddensee Island in the Baltic Sea offers all the seclusion you could ask for.

There are no cars and you can only get around on foot, by bike or by horse-drawn carriage. On the beach, a basket-like chair built for two will shelter you from the elements while you get closer to your significant other.

7. Lake District, UK

Spend your honeymoon in a little country inn in the Lake District and you’ll soon understand why this region of England inspired so many poets and writers, among them William Wordsworth and Beatrix Potter.

The scenery is made even more romantic by the presence of ancient castles.

8. Charleston, South Carolina

With its oak-lined cobblestone streets, horse-drawn carriages and antebellum mansions, Charleston really turns on the Southern charm. This historic city is foodie heaven too and what could be more romantic than a sunset cruise on a schooner?

9. Bran, Romania

There are thousands of towns with castles that make a great setting for a honeymoon but Bran Castle is the one that was purportedly home to Count Dracula.

The beautiful village of Bran is also a popular agro-tourism destination.

10. Trinidad and Tobago

The lush tropical vegetation, sandy beaches and steel bands tell you that you’re in the Caribbean.

What makes Trinidad and Tobago different from those Caribbean destinations that feature as ports of call on every cruise is that this island nation is still very much unspoilt by mass tourism and features a fascinating cultural diversity, complete with Hindu festivals.
