Dog owners looking for answers to “wires” found in Pedigree food

“I held a magnet upside down and it stuck to it and wouldn’t fall off”

“It looks like little black and white hair pieces but it’s actually really coarse and it feels like plastic,” Traci Boe of Ada said.

Dog owners are looking for answers after finding what they say looks like wire objects in their Pedigree dog food.

Thousands have shared this online and some dog owners locally tell us they’re worried for other pets.

Pedigree said what pet owners are finding in their dog food is not wire but natural fibers, like pig hair, from processing the food.

Pet owners said otherwise.

It’s dinner time for Brooklyn, a time any dog would get excited.

“Sometimes she’ll start and sometimes she won’t,” Boe said.

But that’s not the case with this bowl of Pedigree.

See she’s smelling it now see she smelled at me and now she’s looking at me like oh i don’t want that,” Boe said.

It’s the same brand the 11-year-old dog has eaten her whole life but not this time.

“She started avoiding it and i just thought it was because of her teeth,” Boe said.

Traci Boe wasn’t sure why until finding multiple posts on Facebook.
People found what they said are wires embedded in the food.

Screen Shot 2015-08-26 at 10.55.03 AMSo she took a look.

“I held a magnet upside down and it stuck to it and wouldn’t fall off,” Boe said. “It’s just a tiny black piece. They’re really hard to see.”

Brooklyn hasn’t gotten sick at all in the time she’s eaten the food but she has strayed away from it. Other dogs in the area have actually gotten sick.

Sharice Gerving of Grand Forks shared a video.

“There’s a wire coming out of the dog food and he’s been eating this. It’s like fishing line wire,” Gerving said in the video.

She said she talked with Pedigree after her dog lost nearly 10 pounds.

Sharice is getting a refund for the bag and was told they would cover vet bills if it turns out the food caused her dog to lose weight.

But Pedigree is telling the hundreds, who posted on their Facebook, that it has tested the affected kibble and say its naturally-occurring fibers from meat and bone meal and are completely safe.

It’s still a scare for owners like Traci who have since switched to a different brand that Brooklyn eats right up.

Valley News Live went to the same store that Traci bought her Pedigree dog food.

In the first scoop I was able to find something that resembled what Traci was seeing.

It’s so hard to see but there is a photo of multiple pieces that look just like Traci’s dog food.

You can call Pedigree at 1-800-525-5273 (8:00am-4:30pm CT), or send them a direct message on Facebook with your phone number.

Pedigree recalled some of its dog food in 2014 but reports indicate it was for plastic being found in the dog food.
