“Sosua Bay is known for its stunning beaches, watersports and nightlife”

A British woman has died while on holiday in the Dominican Republic, the Foreign Office has confirmed.

Sian Louise Marshall-Plewes, 36, reportedly drowned while swimming in the sea near Sosua Beach on the country’s northern coast.

Media reports from the Caribbean nation say she was knocked off her feet by a wave and swept away.

Ms Marshall-Plewes was said to be swimming at Sosua Beach at 4am on Saturday with her boyfriend, believed to be a local, after a night out.

She became separated from him and her body was later found on another part of the beach by local civil defence volunteers.

In a tribute page on Facebook, former pupils said she was “an amazing teacher”.

One comment read: “She was a great teacher – always smiling.” Another said: “An inspirational teacher who had so much to offer.”

Her body was taken to the Cabarete medical centre and will be transferred to the National Institute of Forensic Science as part of the investigation.

The Foreign Office said it was providing assistance to Ms Marshall-Plewes’ family.

The website sosua.com says the north coast of the Dominican Republic has been a top tourist destination for Europeans for nearly three decades and has a very large expat community.

It describes it as “one of the most beautiful beaches in the Dominican Republic and among the top tourist destinations of the Caribbean”.
