Dominican Republic hailed as undisputed King of Caribbean Tourism following 5.8% rise in visitors
The Dominican Republic has claimed the title of most-visited Caribbean destination, following a 5.8% increase in tourism over the last two months. (1) Caribbean travel expert Carl McBurnie of Caribique Villa Rentals comments on the growing number of travellers flocking to this holiday hotspot.
“The recent surge in visitors to The Dominican Republic comes as no surprise. This Caribbean nation has always been high on travel wish lists but recent government initiatives to promote tourism in the region are really starting to pay off,” explains McBurnie. “The Dominican Republic is a holiday destination that appeals to all types of travellers, whether they are laid back beach lovers, active adrenaline junkies or history buffs.”
The Baltimore Post Examiner reports that the biggest segment of tourists visiting the Dominican Republic came from North America (60.42 percent), followed by Europe (24.58 percent). (2)
The island is home to a selection of natural wonders including the Caribbean’s highest mountain peak, Pico Duarte, as well as the Caribbean’s largest lake and lowest elevation, Lake Enriquillo. A recent article in The Irish Independent also voted it 4th in the top 5 best value holidays right now. (3)
McBurnie explains, “Along with the natural beauty and historical interest the region offers, the Dominican Republic offers luxury at a surprisingly low cost. It’s easier than ever to get a good deal on a luxury Caribbean holiday, and we’ve introduced a new Caribique Villa Specials search to help users find the best value quickly.”
Santo Domingo is the capital of the Dominican Republic and its historical Colonial Zone was declared an UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1990 (3). Recent wide scale refurbishment to Santo Domingo means it is now even more of a highlight for visitors to the area.
The Dominican Republic boasts a variety of lesser well-known cities and towns worth a visit too. McBurnie picks out two of his favourites: “Cabarete on the North Coast is a kite-boarding paradise with a bohemian vibe. The mountain retreats of Jarabacoa and Constanza offer horseback riding and canyoning.”
