Topics: Thanksgiving, UGH!!
Thanksgiving, UGH!! Okay, so lets talk turkey. Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays of the year. Its all about family and fun and food, three of my fav things without any of the other requirements attached to other holidays. You don’t have to do anything on Thanksgiving if you don’t want to. Although its a great holiday, its risky this year. With an all time high number of new cases today at 170,473, according to NBC News and the fourth day this week that we have set a new record, this holiday can increase our CoViD numbers even more. 1249 Americans died from CoViD-19 today. Things will be getting worse for the next several months. Dr. Anthony S. Fauci, the nation’s top infectious disease expert, was on CBS This Morning today to plead with Americans to take seriously the skyrocketing coronavirus case numbers across the country, warning the danger is elevated as families prepare to celebrate Thanksgiving. Meeting with anyone outside one’s household indoors for an extended period of time carries risks. Getting tested, quarantining after travel and wearing masks are ways to reduce that risk, Dr. Fauci reiterated. So what can you do? Let me tell you what my family is doing. All of us are getting tested a day before Thanksgiving. If its not too cold or raining, we will be bundled up and celebrating the meal outdoors. Households will be sitting together to limit the contact time between different groups. If we have to go indoors, we will be eating far apart from each other with windows open. We will gather to talk with masks on and only take them off when we are eating or drinking and only for as short a time as possible. Each table will have its own food, utensils and cups to limit sharing between households. We are looking to reduce risk by following basic public health principles: social distancing, face masks, hand washing and testing. What ever you decide to do, be cautious and think about limiting risk. Keep vulnerable high risk people safe. Perhaps drop food off and do a Zoom holiday. Put some thought into this. I am looking forward to Thanksgiving this year. It will be different but it still will be fun. I will start my day as medical advisor to the Macys Thanksgiving Parade and then head to my sister’s home for a socially distant, safe feast where I will overeat, as usual, and enjoy the company of people I love. Be well, Dr. Stu Weiss |
