Today’s topics: New vaccines won’t be rushed
New Vaccines won’t be rushed Today, two members of the administration tried to reassure Americans that vaccines won’t be rushed out before the upcoming election. The head of Operation Warp Speed, Moncef Slaoui, PhD, said that there is a very, very low chance that the trials that are running as we speak could read before the end of October. “Every day that we can be faster, we try to be faster,” he said. “For us, there is absolutely nothing to do with politics, and many of us may or may not be supportive of this administration—it’s irrelevant, frankly” HHS Secretary Alex Azar also weighed in saying that the timing of vaccine has nothing to do with the upcoming election. I certainly hope that their expressed sentiments are true. If a vaccine comes out early, as part of an “October Surprise” I will join the Americans that said they wouldn’t take the vaccine as soon as it becomes available. In a USA Today poll today, 2/3 of surveyed Americans said that they wouldn’t take the vaccine as soon as it comes out. 25% said that they wouldn’t take it at all. In order for the vaccine program to be effective, people must trust the vaccine and the process of evaluating vaccine candidates must be transparent. Short column today. Have a safe and pleasant Labor Day holiday weekend. Be well and take care of yourself. We will get through this together.–Dr. Stu |
