New York City has become an amazing place to be during the CoViD-19 pandemic. Due to careful and thoughtful actions over these past 5 months, NYC has gone from the nation’s hot spot to one of the safest places in the country. On Saturday, NYC reported ZERO deaths for the first time since this started. Saturday showed 50 new cases, 3 new hospital admissions and zero deaths across the entire city. Yesterday, showed 4 new cases, zero hospital admissions and 1 death. To go from thousands of new cases per day and a peak of 597 deaths on April 7th to where we are today is a credit to the leadership at the city and state levels. New York City is only now (July 6th) at phase 3 with outdoor dining allowed and finally personal care like nail salons and spas. Still no indoor dining but restaurants have built alcoves into the streets for lots of socially distant outdoor dining. Its a great compromise that is allowing the city to reopen without putting people at risk. In addition, certain outdoor parks are reopening. We are involved with the reopening of the Governors Island park and recreation area, which is opening tomorrow. Contrast that with Miami or Houston or you pick a city in the South or Southwest. In the states that opened early and in which Governors refuse to take actions required to protect their citizens, virus cases are skyrocketing. Florida, for example, set an all time record yesterday for most new cases. The reported 15,300 new cases beats New York State’s record by about 3700 people. As predicted, as the number of hospitalizations grows, the death rates are starting to creep upwards as well. Many of the new cases in the southern states are related to young people gathering together while ignoring social distancing and pleas for face coverings with the mistaken belief that they are not affected by the illness. However a study published in the Journal of Adolescent Heath estimated that 33% of men ages 18-25 and 30% of women of the same age range are at risk for serious complications from CoViD-19 infections. A study out of the UK last week found Pediatric Inflammatory Syndrome, the not well understood inflammatory disease that affect young children weeks after a CoViD-19 infection was found 11 times more than expected. On tonight’s TV news, there was a report of a young man who died after attending a CoViD-19 party in which young people intentionally expose themselves to the virus. These rising numbers make the questions about resuming school in the fall much more difficult. Besides being a board certified Emergency Medicine Physician, I am also board certified in Pediatrics (I did a pediatrics residency first and then an EM residency). I understand the issues surrounding the importance of sending kids to school. Besides the educational value and the social development, school also provides meals, social support, abuse detection, and a safe environment for kids. However, in this worsening pandemic picture in the south and west, balancing that good against the harm of sending kids into an environment where they can catch CoViD-19 and even if they don’t get very sick themselves, they can still bring it home and hurt their parents or vulnerable family members, not to mention faculty members is difficult. Several large school districts in California announced today that they will begin the school year online. Los Angeles and San Diego decided that it was too dangerous to bring kids together. This is a very difficult time in our country and we are still not taking action at the federal level to do what is necessary to bring this virus under control. Be well and take care of yourself. There are storm clouds on the horizon. –Dr. Stu |
