Help is on the way Today, President Biden released the 200 page National CoViD-19 Strategy. He announced that “Help is on the way” but he also went on to say that things will get worse before they get better. He said that it will take months to vaccinate enough Americans to make a difference and the death toll will likely top 500,000. He went on to say that we didn’t get into this mess overnight but we will get through this. We will defeat this pandemic. He compared the 400,000 dead as the same number for all of World War Two and said the efforts will be a full-scale wartime effort. He spoke about using the Defense Production Act across all Federal Departments and industry to produce the medical supplies and equipment to tackle this national emergency. President Biden then took 10 executive actions aimed directly at the pandemic. These included guidance and resources to safely reopen schools, new travel rules for people entering the US, the creation of a National Pandemic Testing Board and a CoViD-19 Health Equity Task Force. He also authorized the reimbursement of states if they activate and use National Guard troops in their pandemic response. Masks will now be required on all Federal property as well as on interstate travel including busses, trains and flights. International travelers into the US must show proof of negativeCoViD-19 test prior to arriving in the US. On vaccines, President Biden maintained his promise of 100 million doses put into people’s arms within the first 100 days of his presidency. Biden officials told CNN that they inherited NO NATIONAL VACCINE PLAN from the Trump administration and in many areas, they were starting from scratch. One source said “There is nothing for us to rework. We are going to have to build everything from scratch”. Unbelievable! The National Strategy has seven goals: 1. Restore Trust with the American People 2. Mount a safe, effective, and comprehensive vaccine campaign 3. Mitigate spread through expanding masking, testing, data, treatment, health care workforce, and clear public health standards 4. Immediately expand emergency relief and exercise the Defense Production Act 5. Safely reopen schools, businesses, and travel while protecting workers 6. Protect those most at risk and advance equity, including across racial, ethnic and rural/urban lines 7. Restore U.S. leadership globally and build better preparedness for future threats The President immediately restored the White House National Security Council Directorate for Global Health Security and Biodefense. This office was idiotically dismantled by President Trump despite near universal medical agreement that we were overdue for a pandemic based on historical trends. These actions along with the US rejoining the World Health Organization will go a long way to begin the process of stabilizing the out of control situation we now face here in the US and around the world. I welcome all of these actions. We finally have sound leadership taking decisive actions to handle our national crisis. Bravo. Take care of yourself so we can get through this together.
