Quick Updates B.1.1.7 variantFirst official case report of UK variant B.1.1.7 was found in a 20 year old man in Colorado with no travel history. This suggests that the new virus is already spreading in our communities. Since we do little viral genetic sequencing in the US, there is no way to actually know how much of the new virus is circulating. Hospitals overflowing States out west are reporting record numbers of new cases. This is bad news and may be due to the new variant, which may be up to 70% more infectious. Many places have little to no ICU bed availability and some hospitals are running out of Oxygen. Vaccine Distribution falling way behind In a continuing failure of this administration’s pandemic response, right up until the very end of its term, the promised 20 million Americans vaccinated by the end of December will be way off. As per the CDC CoViD Data Tracker, only 2.1 million of the 11.4 million doses already distributed have been given. President elect Biden today warned that at this rate, it will take years and not months to vaccine the American people. Stay safe, we will all get through this together. Be well, Dr. Stu Weiss |
