Topics: Rough times ahead
Rough Times Ahead NBC News tonight reported that the US reported 144,249 new cornora cases today. That is by far, the highest number of new cases we have had in one day. 47 States are showing uncontrolled spread of coronavirus. The COVID Tracking Project reports that 61,964 Americans were hospitalized with COVID-19 as of Nov 10. That’s the most hospitalizations recorded since the beginning of the pandemic in March. As you may remember, hospitalizations lag behind new cases by a few weeks so we should expect that hospitalizations will continue to rise and 3-4 weeks after that, deaths will increase. Hospitals in the middle of our country are struggling to keep up and already many are reporting that they lack sufficient beds or staff to care for the enormous number of patients they are seeing. This is going to be a rough next two-three months. With a complete vacuum of national strategy for dealing with the pandemic and the current administration focused on negating the election, Governors are left on their own and some act wisely and other act stupidly. The Strategic National Stockpile has less than half of the N-95 masks they had hoped they would have heading into the winter months, Hospitals and nursing homes are again competing for scarce medical supplies and equipment, This is April and May all over again As the weather get colder and we spend more time indoors, as expected, covid numbers will go up. I know we are all suffering from pandemic fatigue, I know I am tired of all of this, but now is NOT the time to become lax with basic public health practices. Remember, face coverings, hand washing and social distancing work and are the mainstay of stopping the spread of SARS-CoV-2. In fact, the CDC just came out with new guidance stating that cloth masks protect both the wearer and the people around them (it used to say that masks only protect people around the wearer). We got good news about the Pfizer vaccine earlier this week. That is great but we still have major issues with supply chain of the vaccine. It requires extremely cold temperatures to store it, around minus 80. Normal freezers can’t get to anywhere near minus 80. It still looks like late spring is the earliest that we will have widespread vaccination programs up and running across the US. Contact tracing question I have gotten several similar questions from clients about contact tracing recently. When you are doing contact tracing, the CDC recommends that you go back 48 hours from the positive test or diagnosis to find close contacts. Some people were going back a week or two but that is not necessary. Lingering Fatigue Another reason to avoid getting CoVid was reported in a new study. Researchers in Ireland looked at people who had recovered from a CoViD-19 infection and found that 52% has persistent fatigue up to 10 weeks after catching coronavirus. Stay safe and try to remember to protect yourself and your families, especially as the Thanksgiving holiday approaches. Do not gather in large groups for the holiday. Its only one year and how terrible would it be if vulnerable members of your family got sick and ended up alone in an understaffed hospital. Be well, Dr. Stu Weiss |
