Butterbeer Recipe from the Wizarding World of Harry Potter

“That’s what books are for. To travel without moving an inch” – Jhumpa Lahri. How many of you have travelled with your favorite character and lived your favorite books yourself? Books are the best way to allow a child to explore. While I did not read as much as a kid (except for the occasional comics and some short stories at the school library), I was always fascinated by stories. I used to lose myself in the mythological stories my grandma told us. I made up for the absence of books in my childhood during my adolescence and teenage years. I became a voracious reader holding on to every word the authors said and living the adventures of the characters in my head.

Cream Soda for Butterbeer

I have been out of touch with that habit lately but books will always stay close to my heart (or Kindle for that matter :P). There have been a few books and authors who have molded my character, my personality and who I am today. One among those is (I am sure you guessed it with the recipe title itself!) J.K. Rowling and the Harry Potter series!

Harry Potter may have turned 34 this July 31st but for me, the eleven year old bespectacled geek lives on! The 15year old me (that was when I was introduced to Mr. Potter) not only lived an adventurous life and travelled through Europe but also learnt some life lessons like “It is our choices…that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities”-Albus Dumbledre. Profound, eh?

One of the best things that can ever happen to man is to live their fantasy and that’s precisely how I felt when I visited the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at the Universal studios a couple of years. Age forgotten, I went through those few hours as a kid living every page of the book, drank some Butterbeer, bought a wand, and even walked through Dumbledore’s office! While I cannot recreate all of that in my living room, there is one thing I can for sure, and that is Butterbeer!!

Harry Potter recipes

Whether you have a kid who is a die hard Potter fan or you are a potter maniac yourself, this Butterbeer recipe is the closest thing to living a book! I have searched far and wide, tried and tested and tweaked recipes to match the taste of the Butterbeer available at the Three Broom Sticks at Orlando and the Butterbeer I had imagined in my head all those years.

Here is the recipe for

Butterbeer

BUTTERBEER FROM THE WIZARDING WORLD OF HARRY POTTER
Prep Time: 10 minutes

Total Time: 10 minutes

Serves: 2

Ingredients

For the Soda
2 twelve-oz Cream Soda bottles (chilled)
1/4 tsp professional strength imitation butter flavor (if using anything less stronger, increase to 1/2 tsp) for each serving
A pinch of salt for each serving
For the foam topping
1/2 cup heavy cream
2 tbsp sugar
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
1/4 tsp professional strength imitation butter flavor (if using anything less stronger, increase to 1/2 tsp)
Directions

Whip the heavy cream with sugar, vanilla extract and imitation butter flavor until soft peaks are formed. Set aside.
In a beer mug (or a souvenir mug), add the imitation butter and a pinch of salt and mix.
Pour in the chilled soda.
Top it with a portion of whipped cream and serve.
Stir as you savor the marvelous Butterbeer!
My Take:

An adult version can include an ounce of rum in the drink.

You can also make your own cream soda at home. I have not tried it.
