The RCIPS can confirm that on Thursday 28th May 2015, as a result of a routine patrol by the Air Operations Unit helicopter crew, a suspicious panga type vessel was observed 45 miles south east of Grand Cayman. Working in conjunction with the Joint Marine Unit vessels Guardian and Tornado, the vessel was intercepted and three males on board detained by Joint Marine Unit officers. The three males, believed all Caymanian nationality, were arrested for suspicion of drugs and customs offences and currently remain in custody. The vessel and occupants were all brought back to Grand Cayman, where investigations continue.

Detective Superintendent Robert Scotland said “this is a further example of our pro-active operations focused on the border security of the Cayman Islands and co-ordinating the Marine and Air resources effectively.”

The Air Operations Unit also carried out a second medevac this week earlier in the day. A male cardiac patient in life threatened condition was conveyed by Cayman Airways Express air ambulance from Cayman Brac to Owen Roberts International Airport. Due to the need for rapid and immediate transfer to Heath City, East End, the patient was transferred on the airport apron to the police helicopter for that transfer. The flight was completed in eight minutes, with the helicopter landing on a cleared landing site to the rear of Health City. The patient is now stable in the hospital specialist cardiac unit.
