ECLAC meeting to discuss role of renewable energy in response to climate change
Caribbean energy experts are set to address the challenges that climate change poses to the energy sector. To do so, they will discuss the application of renewable energy policies at an upcoming meeting hosted by the Economic Commission of Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) subregional headquarters for the Caribbean.
The increasing impact of climate change across the Caribbean calls for a common and shared understanding among policy makers of the challenges posed to the energy sector, as well as for a coordinated disaster risk management approach and response strategy. Renewable energy can play a pivotal role in this regard.
Cognizant of the above, ECLAC Caribbean’s new study, entitled `The enhancement of resilience to disasters and climate change in the Caribbean through the modernization of the energy sector’, seeks to provide alternatives to strengthen the resilience of energy systems in the Caribbean, in a context of the subregion’s high vulnerability to recurring disasters and the impacts of climate change.
The findings of this study will be discussed in a meeting at ECLAC Caribbean headquarters in Port of Spain, on 26 November 2018. The focus of the meeting will be the methodology used in examining the prospects for enhancing the deployment of renewable energy techniques in the Caribbean, through the modernization of national electricity grids. Participants will also have an opportunity to identify data gaps and challenges which may exist and make recommendations to strengthen the study.
