Election of new Anglican Bishop of Jamaica and the Cayman Islands
Some 300 clergy and lay representatives of the Church are attending a special meeting of the Diocesan Synod which was called to elect a Bishop of Jamaica and the Cayman Islands to fill the vacancy created by the retirement on December 31, 2011 of the Rt. Rev. & Hon. Alfred C. Reid.
Known as an Elective Assembly, the Special Synod is held over two days – Monday, March 26 and Tuesday, March 27. It started with Evensong at 4 p.m. on March 26 at the St. Andrew Parish Church, Half Way Tree, Jamaica. The business session was held on Tuesday, March 27 at St. Luke’s Church Hall, Cross Roads, Jamaica commencing at 10.30 a.m. It will continue until a successor to Bishop Reid is elected or the matter is delegated to a Selection Committee. The session was preceded by a celebration of the Holy Eucharist in the Church at 9.00 a.m.
Two of the nominees are The Rt. Rev. Howard Gregory Suffragan Bishop of Montego Bay and The Rt. Rev. Dr. Robert McLean Thompson Suffragan Bishop of Kingston.
