Fire her if girls lose Caribbean championship – Nevers
By Robert Bailey From Jamaica Star
Veteran coach Winston Nevers said Sunshine Girls coach Jermaine Allison-McCracken should be fired if the national team fails to win the Caribbean Championships in August.
Allison-McCracken got the job in April on a one-year contract with a six-month probation, which will end a month after the Caribbean Championships.
She has come in for a lot of criticism before and since the Sunshine Girls played out 1-1 draw in three-Test series against Barbados.
Nevers told STAR Sports that the British-born Allison-McCracken should be sacked if the team fails to perform in the championships.
“We can’t lose (a game) to Barbados and then lose the Caribbean tournament and still have this coach intact,” said Nevers.
“I don’t expect us to lose but, if we lost, we need to find somebody,” Nevers said, adding that Allison-McCracken expects to have the top players in August.
“I personally know that we should blow away these teams whenever we come up against them,” he said.
POOR DISPLAY
The Sunshine Girls, who are ranked fourth in the world, played poorly against the 12th ranked Bajans and were beaten 43-41 in the final game after a 44-44 draw in the first match and a 40-34 win in the second.
Nevers added that there are many local coaches who could do a much better job than Allison-McCracken.
“We have at least 20 of our club coaches here that are better than this lady,” said Nevers.
“I remember when we beat Trinidad (and Tobago) in Trinidad for the first time, and when we reached number three in the world, it was a lady from Jamaica named Maureen Hall that brought us there,” said Nevers, who is the coach of many-time national champions Jamalco.
“I think we are disrespecting our coaches here because this lady don’t have the quality like plenty of our coaches,” Nevers.
Allison-McCracken signed a one-year contract in March with Netball Jamaica, with a six-month probation period.
