Flood Advisory to be Issued for Cayman Islands Oct 2 & 3

Grand Cayman, 30 September 2024 – The Cayman Islands National Weather Service (CINWS) has issued a Flood Advisory inclusive of a Small Craft Warning in effect October 2 and 3 for the Cayman Islands due to the potential impact of a developing weather system in the region. Residents are advised to be aware of increased wave action with waves rising between 5 – 7 feet by Thursday. Residents living along coastal regions could see increased wave action due to this disturbance.

Current Situation:

A weather system has been marked by the National Hurricane Center in the Northwest Caribbean with a 40% chance of cyclone development over the next seven days. Forecasts project significant rainfall and possible thunderstorms over Grand Cayman within the next 48-72 hours. Grand Cayman could experience up to 4 inches of rainfall and 2 inches in the Sister Islands. This weather pattern could lead to flooding, especially in low-lying and flood-prone areas as the grounds remain saturated following last week’s inclement weather.

Advisory Information:

Residents are urged to take the following precautions:

  • If you are in a low-lying area, be prepared to relocate if conditions worsen.
  • Prepare emergency kits with essentials in case of power outages.
  • Avoid driving through flooded roadways.
  • Stay updated on local news and alerts.

Sandbag Use and Preparations:

Residents living in low-lying areas are encouraged to make the necessary preparations and review their sandbag stock. Sandbags that have made contact with contaminated water are not to be reused and should be disposed of at the landfill.

The public is encouraged to monitor updates from NWS and HMCI for further developments.

Stay safe and vigilant as we continue to monitor the situation closely.
