Charges against ex-Cayman leader highlight corruption risk to offshore sector

From OffshoreAlert

The criminal charges for alleged corruption brought yesterday against former Cayman Islands Premier McKeeva Bush should be welcomed by the jurisdiction’s international business sector.

OffshoreAlert has long been in possession of evidence that Bush has been shaking down international businesspeople operating on the island for many years, trading political influence for personal gain.

Bush was a director of the fraudulently-operated First Cayman Bank, he received a 2.5% over-ride commission on sales of luxury condos built by a foreign developer, and he demanded hundreds of thousands of dollars from a U. S. businessman in return for arranging the approval of re-zoning for a hotel project, all of which has previously been reported by OffshoreAlert.

One person who knows all about corruption in offshore financial centers and its impact on international business is Canadian national Dan Duguay, who is a former Auditor General of the Cayman Islands and who also once worked in the Auditor General’s office in Bermuda.

Duguay will impart his knowledge and experience at the upcoming OffshoreAlert Conference in Miami Beach in a session entitled “Corruption in OFCs: How Big is the Problem & What is its Impact on International Business?”

He will be joined by Miami-based attorney Ed Davis, whose experience includes investigating corruption between the Antiguan government and fraudster Allen Stanford, former Bank of Credit and Commerce International fraud investigator Rodney Gallagher, and British attorney Andrew Bodnar, who specializes in fraud and corruption investigations.

The OffshoreAlert Conference helps attendees to make better-informed decisions when conducting business in offshore financial centers by supplying them with credible, accurate and up-to-date information about jurisdictions, products, services, and legislation.

The OffshoreAlert Conference will take place at The Ritz-Carlton, South Beach in Miami Beach, Florida, on May 5-7, 2013.
