UPDATE: Another aftershock of 3.8 magnitude was recorded at 12:23 p.m. Located 97 km NNE of Bridgetown, Barbados; 184 km E of Castries, St. Lucia; and 208 km SE of Fort-de-France, Martinique.

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, Thursday July 16, 2015 – Four earthquakes struck off Barbados this morning in the space of five hours – three of them within minutes of each other, including one that caused the evacuation of some buildings across the island.

After a 5.3 magnitude tremor was recorded at 7:01 a.m, a stronger 6.4 magnitude quake shook the island, sending residents scampering out of buildings, around 11:16 a.m.

The other two followed at 11:29 a.m. (4.1 magnitude) and 11:36 a.m. (5.3 magnitude).

All the tremors occurred northeast of the island.

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, Thursday July 16, 2015 – Residents in Barbados this morning reported feeling the tremors from a 5.3 magnitude earthquake that struck about off the island.

People living in nearby St Vincent and the Grenadines as well as Martinique also indicated they felt the tremor.

There were no reports of damage, however.

Initial information from the United States Geological Survey (USGS) and the UWI Seismic Research Centre (SRC) was that the quake occurred around 7:01 a.m. at a depth of between 10 and 15 km. The USGS put the depth at 10 km and while the SRC estimated it at 15.7 km. However, both made it clear the information was only preliminary.

The quake occurred about 125 km northeast of Barbados’ capital, Bridgetown; 240 km east of Castries, St. Lucia; and 262 km east southeast of Fort-de-France, Martinique.

Second, stronger earthquake shakes Barbados

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, Thursday July 16, 2015 – Just four hours after an earthquake shook Barbados and neighbouring islands, another stronger quake has been recorded.

There are reports of people panicking and buildings being evacuated as the 6.4 magnitude tremor shook around 11:16 a.m.

It occurred about 125 km northeast of the capital, Bridgetown; 234 km east of Castries, St. Lucia and 255 km east southeast of Fort-de-France, Martinique, at a depth of 10 km.

St. Lucia, Trinidad and Dominica are among the other Caribbean islands that felt the tremor, based on reports on social media.

The earlier 5.3 magnitude tremor hit at 7:01 a.m., at the same depth and the same distance from Barbados, but 240 km east of Castries and 262 km east southeast of Fort-de-France.
