Anti-slavery activists Freedom United, Uyghur groups, and models stage protest at New York Fashion Week Freedom United campaigned outside the New York Fashion Week venue to draw attention to the fashion industry’s links to forced labor in the Uyghur Region of China. Our Advocacy Officer Herrana Addisu (pictured with megaphone) represented over 47,000 voices powering three Uyghur rights groups, including our partner organization Uyghur Human Rights Project, and Model Alliance all calling for an end to the forced labor of Uyghurs and other Turkic and Muslim people in China. Human trafficking BBC investigative documentary shows harsh reality of forced organ trafficking in Egypt A new episode of the BBC’s investigative documentary show Panorama follows two reporters as they track down and interview a real organ trafficker in Egypt, where the illegal trade in kidneys harvested from desperate migrants is booming. Forced labor Proposal to use prison labor on Malaysian palm plantations prompts concern A high-ranking figure in Malaysia’s lucrative palm oil industry, which relies on migrant workers and has experienced a labor shortage as a result of the pandemic, has suggested using local incarcerated people. Nageeb Wahab, chief executive of the Malaysian Palm Oil Association, said the move could reduce dependence on migrant workers, but activists are concerned of its implications in an industry notorious for exploitation. |
