Furtherland Farm leases may be considered

1_AGRICULTURE 086webAs Government is still in the process of determining the potential framework and criteria for the lease of lands in the area known as Furtherland Farm, no reservations or allocations of land have been made and thus far no requests have taken.

While there have been many expressions of interest this week, after the subject was raised on a local radio show, plans are at a very early stage. At the same time, the intent is to eventually make lots available for private farming.

The Ministry responsible for agriculture is moving ahead with the appointments of the committee that will be tasked with producing a draft policy for the leasing of lands in this location. The policy will address areas such as application requirements & eligibility to lease land, length of lease, lot size, water use plans etc.

The proposal calls for as much of the 282 acre Crown property, located in East End, to be made available for farming. Initial work underway includes surveying the site and reviewing the land capability of the areas that could be earmarked for lease.

Once Cabinet has considered and approved the draft policy, the public will be informed of the details, including the application process. The property, formerly operated by the Her Majesty’s Cayman Islands Prison Service, also houses the new Doppler radar.
