Garden at Maple House Gets Major Makeover
Maple House’s garden has been treated to a wonderful makeover.
Managed by the Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS), staff of the residential home had long wanted to improve its garden for young residents and reached out for help.
Assistance came in the form of the Chamber of Commerce’s Leadership Cayman programme. The group was quick to adopt the idea as its annual class project. It worked to create a sensory garden, a project that had been at the top of the DCFS wish list for the property.
With financial assistance from Greenlight RE Ltd., and donations of materials and plants from Verdie and Sons, Flower Power and Design Homes, after several hours participants transformed the outdoor space into a stunning haven.
The group cleared rubbish and litter, as well as repaired and revarnished the jungle gym. In the sensory garden, they installed wind chimes, bird feeders and a herb box; repaired swinging benches and erected sail shades.
This transformation means a lot to residents and staff, according to the home’s manager Joy White, who says that Power Flower has committed to help maintain the garden.

DCFS Director Felicia Robinson adds, “The sensory garden will allow residents of Maple House to enjoy the outdoors in a calm yet stimulating environment. We are extremely grateful for all the hard work the Chamber’s Leadership Cayman 2017 group put in.”
The sensory garden was formally opened in early May, which is also Child Month. Maple House is a small residential home housing children and young adults with disabilities and special needs.
