Cayman Brac, Cayman Islands, 30 May 2012:

The Annual George AndersonMemorial/Lions Swim Meet took place on Cayman Brac on May 5th for the 36th consecutive year.

The meet pitted the two Primary Schools against each other, with Creek and Spot Bay coming out victorious. It was a very tight competition which may just have shown different results had all swimmers been in attendance. High School competitors swam on an individual basis with many exciting races at hand.

“The Lions support of swimming in the Cayman Islands is something which swimmers in Cayman Brac and Grand Cayman benefit from,” commented Coach Michael Hundt from the Brac. “The Lions Brac Meet is always an exciting event, and it gives our swimmers a great warm up for The Lions Sprint Meet in Grand Cayman which the Stingray Swim Club hosts”.

Individual results are as follows:

Layman E. Scott Sr. High School High School: Champion Girl – Chineme Ezema, 14 yrs;

Champion Boy – Jacob Scott, 15 yrs; Best Effort Girl: Leshontae Missick, 14 yrs and Best

Effort Boy: Andre Mena, 13 yrs.

Primary School: Champion Girl – Haylie Tibbetts, 10 yrs, Creek and Spot Bay Primary;

Champion Boy – Aidan Van der Touw, 7 yrs West End Primary; Best Effort Girl: Antonia

Mena, 11 yrs, Creek and Spot Bay Primary and Best Effort Boy: Sean Valentine, 8 yrs, Creek and Spot Bay.

The Swimmer of the Meet was 6 year old Veandra Robinson. Veandra put in an

awesome performance and has once again shown her mastery of speed and strokes.

She competed in open events, butterfly and individual medley, alongside girls in the 11 and 12 age group and finished second and third respectively.

“The George Anderson Memorial/Lions Swim Meet has been a fixture in our calendar for 37 years,” said Lion Steve Surrey, “The Lions Club and Cayman Brac share a strong sense of community and this meet is a perfect example of this ethos.”

The meet also served as ‘on the job work experience’ for seven of Cayman Brac’s swimming community who had attended a workshop, via Skype, the week before the meet. They learned the fine points of officiating from FINA accredited Neil Booth. Mr. Booth along with Cayman’s own Olive Balderamos, were on hand at the meet to provide assistance and to mentor the recently trained Cayman Brac officials.

CIASA Vice President, Michael Lockwood commented on behalf of CIASA: “CIASA considers the progression of competitive swimming in the Sister Islands to be an important part of its values, goals and objectives. It is good to see that the interest is present in that community and we hope that it continues.”
