Girl, 9, dies day after uncle attacked her family in New Port Richey, according to Pasco deputies
TAMPA – A 9-year-old girl died Friday, one day after her uncle attacked her and her sister and killed their grandmother, according to Pasco County deputies.
In a written statement, the little girl’s mother said of her daughter, Jenica Randazzo’s death, “God must have needed another perfect Angel. She will be loved and missed every day of everyone’s life,” said Jessica Rios.
The girl’s 7-year-old sister, La’nyla Heater, remains hospitalized with severe wounds after Pasco County Sheriff’s Office SWAT members responded to a Catherine Street home Thursday morning.
The suspect, 23-year-old Jason Rios, remains in stable condition at Bayonet Point Hospital.
Police said he injured himself with a drill after he barricaded himself in a neighboring house.
Pasco Sheriff Chris Nocco called it “a horrific situation.”
Nocco said four children, two girls and two boys, were in the home at the time of the attack.
Rios is the children’s uncle and lived at his parent’s home along with their grandchildren. He is a paranoid schizophrenic, according to family members, and a possible drug user.
Rios’ mother, Angela, was killed inside the home.
Nocco said Ernesto Rios, Jason’s father, woke up his grandchildren this morning to get them ready for school. He then started to take a shower. He heard screams and found his wife, Angela, bloodied and severely injured.
After that, he found one of his granddaughters bloodied with severe injuries.
He then ran to his other granddaughter’s room and found her severely injured. Both were transported to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Tampa. The two boys in the home were not injured.
Rios was about to harm a third child when Ernesto intervened, dragged Jason out of the house and told a passerby to call 911. The passerby said he had already made the call.
When law enforcement officers arrived, Rios barricaded himself inside the house next door.
The SWAT team safely removed all the children from their home, but Angela was dead at the scene.
Law enforcement didn’t know if there was anyone else inside the neighboring house where Rios had barricaded himself. It turned out Rios was the only person inside the house.
Negotiators were unable to convince him to surrender. A specialized law enforcement vehicle, called a Bearcat, took out a section of wall and deployed gas in the home.
A short time later, flash-bang devices were set off inside the home.
Jason then came out with one of his hands in a pocket. Deputies had been warned by family members that Rios had access to guns and regularly went shooting.
As he approached deputies, he stumbled into the Bearcat and fell to the ground unconscious.
SWAT members took him into custody and believe he may have used a long drill bit on his neck and an auger on his head and torso.
“Our SWAT team did not fire one round,” Nocco said.
Rios was taken to Bayonet Point as a trauma alert.
Nearby homes were evacuated during the standoff.
“This will live with them forever,” Nocco said of the first responders. Because the scene was so horrific, crisis counseling was offered to everyone on scene.
A spokesperson for the Florida Department of Children and Families has confirmed “prior involvement” with the family and said that Thursday’s tragedy is under investigation.
The two boys are now under the care of their grandparents.
A fundraiser is being held Friday night to help the Rios family with expenses. A food truck will be serving tacos outside Point Fashions from 4-8 p.m. located at 4309 U.S. 19, New Port Richey. All proceeds will go to the family.
