Governor assures Cayman Islands the UK will guarantee LGBTQ equality
GRAND CAYMAN, CAYMAN ISLANDS, 26 September 2016: An official response to the petition issued by Colours Cayman on 20 September 2016 to extend the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Act 2013 to the Cayman Islands has been received by e-mail from Mrs Helen Kilpatrick, Governor of the Cayman Islands. To quote Her Excellency:
“The UK expects the Cayman Islands Government to adhere to its international human rights obligations and to pursue policies and enact legislation guaranteeing [LGBTQ] equality in respect of the rights set out in the Cayman Islands Constitution.”
Additionally, the Governor assured Colours Cayman that the petition would be forwarded to Baroness Anelay, Minister for the Overseas Territories, as requested.
Furthermore, the Minister is scheduled to meet with the Chair and Vice Chair of the Cayman Islands Human Rights Commission (CIHRC) in early October 2016 to discuss issues pertaining to the rights of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer (LGBTQ) people of the Cayman Islands.
