Governor issues election writs

Five males and one female were issued the election writs as returning officers for the six electoral districts in the May 2013 Cayman Islands General Elections.

H.E. Governor Duncan Taylor handed over the writs to Philip Martin Jackson, Ned Solomon, Philip Barnes, Delano Solomon, Dave Tatum and Jennifer Kaufman and this formally launches the election preparations and confirms exactly how many people will be returned in each district.

Kearney Gomez, the supervisor of elections announced that the May 2013 election would be his last, describing it as his “swan song.”

He said it was going to be “a very serious election” and everyone would need to be “on their P’s and Q’s”.

All candidates would be issued with packages that outlined all of the relevant laws, including the anti-corruption legislation.

Gomez said he had every confidence in the returning officers who were all veterans and the team had run many elections, several by-elections and two referendums. “I am positive that this one will run smoothly too,” he added.

The Legislative Assembly will be dissolved on 26th March 2013 and nomination day will take place on 27th March when all candidates planning to stand in the election for seats in parliament must declare their intention.

Election Day is 22nd May, 2013 and those who are entitled to vote must place their names on the register by 2nd January.

This will be the first election in the Cayman islands where Bodden Town will elect four seats (from three) and George Town six (from four).
