Grant Thornton’s inaugural golf day took place on Thursday last week (16th November), and despite having to re-locate to the Ritz due to the water-logged North Sound Golf Course, spirits weren’t dampened and competitive spirits were high!

Over 70 budding golfers picked up their clubs and joined the Grant Thornton team for a fun day of on course competitions, networking and fundraising initiatives.

After a shotgun start the teams were able to experience the delights of the 9-hole golf course set amid the stunning natural beauty of the Cayman Islands, and also get the opportunity to meet and greet Grant Thornton’s new Partner and Head of Funds, Greg O’Driscoll. Greg’s appointment further demonstrates the growing momentum and expansion of Grant Thornton Cayman, as it follows the welcoming of fellow Partner Dara Keogh earlier this year, who- at the golf day- re-affirmed the company’s ambitious plans for growth in Cayman; ‘welcoming Greg to the leadership team of Grant Thornton Cayman supports our opportunity to really make our mark and demonstrate how we as a firm, stand out from the other accountancy and audit firms on island. In just 15 years, Grant Thornton has grown 4x in size, and we don’t plan to stop there’.

The whole of the Grant Thornton Cayman office were on hand for the event- whether it be to take part in the putting itself, or helping to deliver a smoothly run, fun day. Ian Johnson of Grant Thornton said “it’s so great to be out of the office, helping to raise funds for a worthy cause. It’s been a brilliant day”. All proceeds from the day are being donated to the Cayman Islands Humane Society.

Teams were pre-arranged, crossing different companies and professionals- giving the players a great opportunity to meet new people and network.

Greg O’Driscoll, Ian Asvakovith, James Bull and Richard Muckle made up the overall winning team of the competition, with Diarmad Murray identified as the ‘closest to the pin’ winner for the men, and Maria Butler for the women. Sam Dawson and Anu O’Driscoll took longest drive winners, and the wooden spoon prize went to the team of John Royle, Sam Dawson, Andrew Peedom and Zach Hoskin- though not a bad thing in this case, as they receive a team lesson from one of the club’s professionals. Other prizes included overnight stays at the Kimpton and the Marriott, through to bottles of Patron.

Grant Thornton were delighted with the day, and the opportunity for Greg to meet with so many of their clients and service providers; ‘it’s been a really fantastic day, and so great for us to all get out on the course together‘, said Greg. ‘We’re so grateful to the generosity of the event’s sponsors too- they really helped make it a successful event with some amazing prizes on offer. Nothing like a bit of competitive spirit on the course!’

Finishing off the day at North Sound Golf Course with a buffet supplied by Southern Spice and some ice cold Caybrew beers, the golfers watched the sun go down on what was a hugely successful fundraiser.
