Greece – Wildfires, update (Greek Civil Protection, JRC EFFIS, Copernicus EMSR) (ECHO Daily Flash of 24 July 2023)

- According to the Greek Civil Protection, in the past 24 hours 64 new wildfires have affected the country resulting in further evacuations and widespread damage, including in Corfu island, Egio, Karystos, Thiva, Kalamata, Volos, Mesolongi and Domokos.
- The main wildfire has been burning across central Rhodes Island (the largest of the Dodecanese Islands, south-eastern Greece). The wildfires started on 18 July and it is currently not fully contained. According to the JRC European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS), the burnt area is approximately of 11,500 hectares.
- The Greek Civil Protection reports, as of 23 July, around 19,000 evacuted people across Kiotari, Gennadi, Pylon, Laerma, Lardos, Lindos, Kalathos, Malona, Asklepieion, Pefkos, Massari and Haraki villages throughout the Island. This represents the largest operation of evacuations for wildfires ever carried out in the country. In addition, the same source reports 11 slightly injured people.
- The Copernicus Emergency Management Service was activated in rapid mapping mode (EMSR675) on 19 July to provide the damage assessment and five maps were produced so far.
- Through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism, over 450 firefighters and 7 planes from Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, France, Italy, Malta, Poland, Romania and Slovakia are supporting the response efforts together with an ERCC Liaison Officer.
- Over the next 48 hours, according to JRC EFFIS, the fire danger forecast is expected from very high to very extreme across the Rhodes Island.

UCPM Response
Greece activated the UCPM with a request for assistance on 18 July 2023.
The following offers of assistance have been made:
• 2 Canadairs (ECPP) from France
• 2 Canadairs (rescEU) from Italy
• 1 Canadair (rescEU) from Croatia
• 2 Air Tractors (rescEU) from Cyprus
• 6 modules of Ground Forest Fire Fighting with Vehicles from Poland, Slovakia, Romania, Bulgaria and Serbia
3 prepositioned teams are located in Greece:
• Ground forest fighting teams with vehicles (Romania, Malta and Bulgaria) 1 ERCC Liaison Officer has been deployed.
Copernicus EMS Rapid Mapping Service (EMSR672, EMSR673, EMSR674, EMSR675,
EMSR676. EMSR677, EMSR678) has been activated.
