Victory brings little joy for Cayman ladies

Providenciales, Turks and Caicos – A comprehensive 3-0 victory in their final match brought little joy to the Cayman Islands national women’s team who missed a spot in the final round of CFU qualifiers.
A double strike from Shenel Gall (45th, 68th) and Shanelle Frederick (89th) gave Cayman their first win of the tournament but didn’t fulfill the ultimate goal.
CIFA President Jeffrey Webb, applauded the ladies on their effort.
“Congratulations to the ladies team for their brave, hard fought effort. CIFA will continue to support the continued development of women’s football, with an eye towards the future and greater success at the regional level.”
The national team ended their time in Turks with a 1-1-1 record and return home keen to rebuild and maintain their young side for the future. Ten of the national team players contested the CONCACAF Under 20 Championship back in January and several were making their debuts on the senior national team.
Cayman needed to win by six clear goals and needed St Kitts and Nevis to defeat Bermuda. Neither instance happened. Bermuda upset the pre match favourites with a decisive 3-1 victory.

PROVIDENCIALES, Turks & Caicos Islands; Wednesday, May 28th 2014 – Group Three for the preliminary qualification rounds for the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Women’s Caribbean Cup concluded with two hard-hitting matches yesterday, Tuesday, May 27th, 2014.
The competition, hosted by the Turks & Caicos Islands Football Association (TCIFA) at its Football Academy (FA) on Providenciales – saw the women’s national football teams from Bermuda, theCayman Islands, St Kitts & Nevis and the Turks & Caicos Islands compete in the preliminary qualification rounds.
The 2014 CFU Women’s Caribbean Cup is the inaugural edition to the Caribbean Cup franchise, an international football competition for national teams of member nations affiliated with the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) of the CONCACAF region. Winners of the inaugural CFU Women’s Caribbean Cup will qualify for both the CONCACAF Women’s Gold Cup and the FIFA Women’s World Cup.
On game day three, St Kitts & Nevis vs Bermuda was the first match of the day. This match witnessed an intense level of play and saw Bermuda’s Akeyla Furbert (number 4) landing the first goal in the 14thminute of the game, which was immediately followed by teammate Shuntae Todd (number 10) at the 17th. Before the end of the second half, Bermuda’s Dominique Richardson (number 7) gave the team an additional point, with St. Kitts & Nevis’ Phoeneia Browne (number 11) scoring her team’s only goal. The results of the game were Bermuda 3 vs St Kitts & Nevis 1.
The final match-up saw fierce competition from the Turks & Caicos vs the Cayman Islands. The game, also a fast-paced one, saw the Cayman Islands scoring its first goal at the end of the first half and ultimately winning 3 – nil. In spite of this the Turks & Caicos team had four really great shots on goal. The Cayman Islands’ Shenel Gall (number 11) scored two goals back to back, with fellow teammate Shanelle Frederick (number 30) landing home one. In the end, it was the team from the Cayman Islands who hit three past the Turks & Caicos.
The standings at present are as follows: on game day one (Friday, May 23rd) – the first of two games being won by St Kitts & Nevis and Bermuda besting the Cayman Islands and the Turks & Caicos Island 5 – nil, respectively. On game day two (Sunday, May 25th) Bermuda and the Cayman Islands tied – 2 goals each; with St Kitts & Nevis scoring 4 points to the Turks & Caicos nil. On game day three (Tuesday, May 27th) saw Bermuda 3 vs St Kitts & Nevis 1; and the Cayman Islands 3 to the Turks & Caicos vs Cayman Islands nil.
With regard to the Group Three preliminary qualification matches, the Bermuda National Women’s Football team will automatically progress to the final group stages of the Caribbean Cup, which take place in Trinidad & Tobago in August.

EDITOR: Although the Cayman Islands National Women’s Football Team beat Turks and Caicos 3-1 on 27th May they will not advance past the group stage in the inaugural Caribbean Cup.
Cayman finishes with four points in Group 3, good enough for third place. Only group winners and the best two group runners-up advance to the finals round.
