Groups come together for Coastal Awareness clean-up on Grand Bahama

GRAND BAHAMA ISLAND, Bahamas — The Coastal Awareness Committee on Grand Bahama in conjunction with many partners, including the Keep Grand Bahama Clean Committee, EARTHCARE, the Royal Bahamas Defence Force Rangers, and many community organizations and young persons staged an island wide Coastal Cleanup on Grand Bahama from East to West.
A large number of companies participated, namely: BORCO, Grand Bahama Shipyard, The Bahamian Brewery, the Hutchison Whampoa Group of Companies, the Container Port, Grand Bahama Airport Ltd., and Freeport Harbour Co. Ltd. The locations targeted on April 20th, 2013 were Barbary Beach, Fortune Beach, Williams Town Beach, all of Pinder’s Point, Lovers Beach and Sunset Beach. Thousands of pounds of marine debris and refuse were removed from these areas and disposed of properly.
The Coastal Awareness Committee on Grand Bahama is pleased with the turnout. Gail Woon, a Committee member observed, “The message that we should keep our coasts and islands clean is very important. Young people taking responsibility for our coasts is very gratifying to see. It has been a great day and we have to thank all of the partners, whose hard work and coordination made this effort possible. We can’t thank you all enough!”
At Williams Town, the Bahamas Defence Force Rangers and EARTHCARE members assisted the Coastal Awareness coordinators with a major clean up of the Williams Town coast. RBDF Rangers Instructors Leading Seaman Lenryck J. Coakley, Able Woman Marine Donella Mackey, and Able Seaman Daryl Jones organized the 69 Royal Bahamas Defence Force Rangers.
